Product Description
A fine Victorian oval beadwork and needlepoint tray by the renowned Glasgow makers Wylie & Lochhead, dating from the late 19th century, circa 1880.
The tray features an elaborate hand-worked beadwork and tapestry panel beneath glass, set against a rich crimson ground with scrolling foliate motifs and a central floral medallion
executed in tiny glass seed beads. The decorative panel is housed within a shaped walnut or stained hardwood frame with rounded ends and small bun feet.
The underside bears the impressed maker’s mark:
Wylie & Lochhead
45 & 50 Buchanan Street
Glasgow
together with the production or inventory number 25749.
Victorian beadwork trays of this quality were both functional and decorative, intended for use in refined parlour interiors as serving trays or table centrepieces. Examples bearing the Wylie & Lochhead stamp are increasingly sought after by collectors of Scottish decorative arts and Victorian interiors.
Condition
Good antique condition consistent with age and use. The beadwork panel retains strong colour and decorative appeal, with some minor bead loss and age-related wear visible in places. The wooden frame shows light surface wear, marks, and patina commensurate with Victorian age.
The protective glass panel has been replaced at some point due to damage to the original glass. The tray otherwise retains its original beadwork panel, frame, and impressed Wylie & Lochhead maker’s stamp. Structurally sound and displays exceptionally well.
